Abstract:

The utilisation of wind energy is limited by accretion of ice at wind turbines. Since ice fragments from wind turbines represent a safety risk measurements are required to reduce this risk to an acceptable level. Based on convection permitting meteorological models climatologies for icing and a map for icing covering the Austrian territory are being developed. By means of innovative imaging techniques applied to observed icing events at wind turbines size, number, and trajectories of falling ice fragments are being determined which serve as a basis for a definition of hazardous areas. Based on these analyses measurements and guidelines for a monitored reduction of the risk for icing are being elaborated together with lawyers and official experts.
