JRF HydExClim

Joint Research Focus Hydrological Extremes in a Changing Climate
Heads: Birgit Bednar-Friedl and Douglas Maraun

1. Joint Research Area

Wegener Center’s research groups gather their expertise in a joint research focus on regional hydrological extremes. The hydrological cycle will change in response to global warming. In particular changes in hydrological extreme events such as heavy precipitation, flooding, and drought may have adverse impacts on different sectors such as energy, public infrastructure, households and agriculture. These impacts also co-depend strongly on further anthropogenic influences such as land-use and water management changes.
In this context we consider four joint research themes (JRTs), geographically focussing mainly on Austria, Styria, and South-Eastern Styria. The work addressing these themes will include projects co-designed between the Wegener Center research groups, external partners and affected stakeholders.

2. Overall Strategic Goals

The overall strategic goals pursued by way of the JRF HydExClim over 2016 to 2020 are:

  • improving the collaboration by joint projects, co-supervision of students, and joint publications;
  • enhancing the international visibility of the impact-relevant research at Wegener Center;
  • exploiting the unique WegenerNet data resource (Feldbach region and Johnsbachtal, Styria);
  • developing advanced concepts for climate information destillation and climate services.
