What is the WegenerNet?

The Region Feldbach in South-Eastern Styria, Austria, has been selected by the Wegener Center as a focus area for a pioneering experiment of Austrian and international climate research. The WegenerNet climate observation network Feldbach region is comprised of over 150 meteorological stations.

These stations measure weather and climate development in a tightly spaced grid (approximately one station per 2 square kilometers) with a previously unknown level of accuracy. The measurements of temperature, humidity, precipitation and further parameters have been taken in 5-min intervals in the entire grid since Jan 1, 2007, so that for the first time such a dense dataset covers about one and a half decades already.

As a smaller "sister network" of the WegenerNet Feldbach region, the WegenerNet Johnsbachtal consists of thirteen meteorological stations (complemented by one hydrographic station at the Johnsbach creek), measuring temperature, humidity, precipitation, radiation, wind, and other parameters in an alpine setting at altitudes ranging from below 700 m to over 2100 m. Data are available partly since 2007, partly since more recent dates and have a temporal resolution of 10 minutes.

Many research projects investigating the climate and environmental change and their impact as well as common weather observation will benefit from these measurements. This leads to a better understanding of climate, weather and environmental risks. Economical and societal consequences can be estimated more precisely. This will provide further benefit to the population in the regions due to the data supporting issues of water and energy supply, protection from natural disasters, zoning issues and regional development.

How can I access WegenerNet Data?

The WegenerNet Data Portal provides access to all WegenerNet data. WegenerNet Johnsbachtal data can also be accessed directly though the WegenerNet Johnsbachtal Data Portal and the alternative Data Portal Johnsbachtal / Gesäuse national park. The data portal is bi-lingual (dt, en) so it can be used also in English.

Where can I find more detailed information on the WegenerNet?

A list of WegenerNet related publications can be found under Publications. Further information ranging from short overviews to detailed presentations containing lots of images to the structure of the net and its scientific use, can be found under Further Information (mostly in German; English ones first listed). The information is continually updated and expanded. If you have any questions or interest beyond the information provided, please send an e-mail to wegcenter(at)uni-graz.at. Your interest is greatly appreciated.
