The Wegener Center for Climate and Global Change at the University of Graz offers a
(Senior) Scientist position (m/f/d),
40 h/w, temporary employment (6 years) with option for permanent position.
Your reponsibilities:
- Design, conduct and lead independent research on climate information for risk assessments (e.g., analysis of extreme events, compound events or tipping points, uncertainties of projections, storylines, climate information distillation).
- Develop your own research agenda in the field
- Contribute to and lead climate risk projects of the Regional Climate Research Group
- Contribute to stakeholder interactions
- Contribute to relevant international networking activities (e.g. WCRP RIfS and WCRP MyClimateRisk, CORDEX, ESMValTool)
- Contribute to and lead proposals
- Lead and contribute to research papers in high-level international journals
- Present at workshops and conferences
- Manage the data of the Regional Climate Research Group
- Maintain the statistical analysis tools (e.g. bias adjustment, feature detection and tracking, Lagrangian modelling, model evaluation diagnostics)
- Independent teaching of courses in climate science, applied mathematics and/or systems sciences as well as participating in the supervision of students
- Participation in organizational and administrative tasks
Your profile:
- PhD or comparable degree in meteorology, physical climate science, physics, computational science or a related subject
- Specialisation in, e.g., artificial intelligence in climate science (data analysis, feature detection, postprocessing, emulation,...), compound events, tipping points, urban climate modelling, coupled soil-vegetation-climate modelling or modelling of local mountain climates
- Complementary expertise to the Regional Climate Research Group, in particular in terms of methodologies
- Good teamworking skills
- A high technical proficiency in handling and analysing big data sets
- Good management skills
- Interest in both scientific discovery and developing solutions for users
- Proven record or the clear potential to develop your own research agenda in the broad field of climate information for risk assessments
- High potential for scientific excellence (demonstrated, for instance, by relevant publications in reputable journals appropriate to career stage)
- Excellent English skills as well as willingness to learn German within the first 6 years to contribute to teaching also at the BSc level and to smoothly interact with stakeholders
What we offer:
We offer an annual gross salary of € 69,060.59 for a fulltime position (B1 with PhD).
After fulfilling a set of specific achievement criteria within the initial six-year period, the scientist would automatically be promoted to a permanent senior scientist position. In the long term, the position would provide the opportunity to develop and lead a team within the Regional Climate Research Group. The successful candidate would have the possibility to write a habilitation thesis.
