Alfred Wegener (1880-1930)
The namesake of the Wegener Center and founding holder of the Chair of Geophysics at the University of Graz (1924-1930) was a brilliant scientist who thought and worked in an interdisciplinary manner in his work on geophysics, meteorology and climatology and was far ahead of his time. The nature of his groundbreaking research into continental drift is a great example - his sketch of the connections between the continents from traces of an ice age around 300 million years ago as a model for the logo is therefore a constant incentive for equally courageous scientific paths and inspiration for the Wegener Center's motto:
