Profile

The Wegener Center is an interdisciplinary institute at the Faculty of Environmental and Regional Sciences and Education, with partner institutes in the Faculties of Natural Sciences; Business, Economics and Social Sciences; and Arts and Humanities. As such we serve as core institute for pooling the University's expertise in Climate, Environmental and Global Change.

We bring together research teams and scientists from, e.g., geophysics and climate physics, meteorology, economics, geography, and regional sciences. At the same time, we maintain and further develop close links with many national and international partners.

Our research ranges from monitoring, analysis, and modeling of climate and environmental change to the investigation of climate change impacts and the analysis of the human dimensions of these changes, in particular related to adaptation and mitigation.

These research interests also drive our strong commitment to promoting young scientists and to teaching. We contribute with our expertise to the curricula of environmental system sciences from bachelor to doctorate levels as well as to a range of further curricula such as physics, economics, sustainable development and global studies.

We are a key institute in the inter-university Field of Excellence "Climate Change Graz", which we initiated and which gathers more than twenty research groups across natural sciences, social sciences and humanities.

At the national level we support the Climate Change Centre Austria (CCCA) network in leading roles. Internationally we collaborate with many leading research centers, contribute to WCRP programmes such as CORDEX and SPARC and the IPCC, and serve on several international panels and boards that contribute to the framing of the international research agenda.

The Wegener Center actively engages also in knowledge transfer as well as public relations and outreach. We serve as recognized expert partners for climate, environmental and global change issues, especially for decision makers in politics, public governance, business and society but also for the media and the general public.
