Abstract:
The EU committed itself to ambitious targets on the reduction of air pollution. The directive on national emissions ceilings for certain atmospheric pollutants set the objective to reach the national ceilings by 2010 and in later years. The emissions ceilings comprise the main pollutants nitrous oxides (NOx), sulphur dioxide (SO2), volatile organic compounds (VOC) and ammonia (NH3). The thematic strategy on air pollution envisages a further reduction of these air pollutants and of particulate matter until 2020.
Austria has to make a contribution to these targets. The project NEC 2020 thus aims at developing indicators that account for future developments of the air pollutants and the special features of different sectors to analyze teh Austrian air pollution reduction potential.
