On December 12, 2000 the “Protocol on the Negotiations between the Czech and the Austrian Governments, led by Prime Minister Zeman and Federal Chancellor Schüssel, with the Participation of Commissioner Verheugen from the EU” was signed in Melk, Austria. The aim of this high level agreement was, among others, further development of good-neighborly relations between the Czech Republic and the Republic of Austria.
In Chapter III of the Melk Protocol both governments agree to establish the so-called “Energy Partnership”. To implement this part of the agreement both governments appointed a group of Energy Experts which should jointly study the problems of energy supply and consumption and sustainable development in both countries.
Both governments agreed to promote, support and finance joint projects and the program management in the field of energy efficiency, renewable energy and emission reduction.
The joint Czech-Austrian Energy Expert (CZ-AT EEG) group was appointed at the end of 2002. It consists of a number of energy experts from different Czech and Austrian universities and institutes. The CZ-AT EEG is convening at regular meetings both in Austria and the Czech Republic and is jointly working on energy projects of mutual interest. Stefan Schleicher was named the leader of the Austrian delegation.
