Abstract:
The Region Feldbach (Styria/Austria) has been selected by the WegenerCenter as a focus area for a lead experiment of Austrian and international climate research. The ‘WegenerNet climate observation network Region Feldbach’ is comprised of over 150 weather stations. These have been measuring weather and climate development in a tightly spaced grid (approximately one station per 2 square kilometers) with a previously unknown level of accuracy. The WegenerNet started to deliver data in the fall of 2006. The measurements have been taken in a 5-min interval in the entire grid since Jan 1, 2007. 2007 is the first year ("pilot year") of operation. Many research projects investigating the climate and environmental change and their impact as well as common weather observation will benefit from these measurements. This will lead to a better understanding of climate, weather and environmental risks. Economical and societal consequences can be estimated more precisely.
This will provide further benefit to the population in the region due to the data supporting zoning issues, issues of water and energy supply, protection from natural disasters and regional development.
