Herzlich willkommen!

Globally increasing temperatures are likely to have impacts on terrestrial, aquatic and marine ecosystems that are difficult to manage. The effects of climate change are likely to be greater in tropical and subtropical developing countries, owing to the greater importance of the primary sector in these countries in terms of contribution to GNP (gross national product). Many African nations are therefore largely affected by climate change.

This presentation focuses on Senegal, detailing the causes and effects of climate change mainly on agriculture. It also highlights mitigation strategies and measures for rural population to adapt to climate change, especially in the agricultural sector.

Our challenge for Senegal will be to develop policies, which contribute to guarantee a sustainable rural development and maintain the young generation in their land. This needs comprehensive political cooperation with partners in the developed countries.

Ismael Ndao received is master’s degree in Geography after studying at the Gaston Berger University (Saint-Louis, Senegal). In 2007 he attained his PhD in Ecology at the University of Vienna. His fields of expertise are natural resource management and sustainable agriculture. He is now Representative and Program Advisor at the Austrian Organisation for Development Co-operation (HORIZONT3000 Senegal).
